What Is Anger Management And How To Practice It

Anger management has become a vital skill in the lives of thousands of people who find themselves unable to control their behavior in the face of certain stimuli. The consequences of this can be extremely serious, such as getting into fist fights and being seriously injured or ending up with a criminal record, or causing a road traffic accident. There are techniques which can be used to keep anger under control in the short term, as well as lessening the chances of it occurring frequently again in the future.

Anyone considering what is anger management needs to understand that there are two separate aspects to the discipline, both of which are of equal importance. The first is the short term management of any situation where the individual is stimulated to an angry reaction, because failure to do this could have extremely serious consequences. The second is to try to isolate the root causes of the angry reactions so they can be removed or lessened through therapy. Any individual who is aware they have a problem with anger needs to find a way to release it safely in the immediate situation, such as by counting or imagining a peaceful scene.

If you are habitually exhibiting angry reactions it is vital to consider what the cause may be. Often, there will be a common factor or situation in which the reaction will occur. This can be managed in the short term by doing everything possible to avoid the situation. Road rage is one obvious example of an anger which can be managed in the short term by simply not driving and using buses, trains or taxi cabs to get where you need to go. This is only a short term crude step and does nothing to deal with the underlying problem, but it may just keep you out of trouble until a more lasting solution can be found.

Anger Games

If the initial situation where anger management needs to be applied does not lead to a serious incident, there are other ways in which the patient can manage their anger. The act of deep breathing, with or without exercise, is proven to help get the emotions quickly under control and to allow the patient to calm down more quickly. Going for an energetic run in a rural environment way from the stimulation which causes anger will work even more effectively. Yoga is allied to breathing and also works well, as does listening to relaxing classical music, which draws the attention to a different part of the brain.

These short term management techniques can also help with the long term management of the condition, as they can help to condition the brain into looking for alternatives to an undisciplined reaction. To really make a difference to the life of someone who is persistently angry, though, you need to be able to reach the root causes of the difficulty. These may be within an immediate situation which the patient is going through, such as an abusive marriage or bullying at work, or it may be something from the distant past.

Because anger is stimulated with the brain by electromagnetic connections, it is possible to control it to a degree with drug therapy. This is not something which should form part of a long term program in isolation, as it only masks the difficulty instead of curing it. The connections which cause the angry reaction are prevented from occurring by the drugs which are used, and this can provide some relief to a serious condition while other more lasting therapies are worked upon. Anger management often needs to happen in stages.

If the underlying difficulty which is causing the angry reactions is buried deep in the mind because the conscious mind has repressed the memory of it, there will need to be a program of counseling and therapy aimed at finding this cause and removing the emotional charge from it. In rare situations this may be offered as part of a package of treatment for the anger itself, but it will usually need to be paid for in isolation. Techniques such as hypnotherapy can take the individual back in time and can help them make contact with repressed incidents, which can then be brought to the surface and dealt with.

Often the most difficult part of anger management is realizing that it is needed in the first place. It can hard to accept that the situation is not entirely due to circumstances in the outside world. This in itself can be a symptom of something buried deeply within the mind, as the inner mind can be desperately trying to make you avoid recognizing the problem and attempting to deal with it. The key to recognizing a situation which needs to be dealt with is in noticing when anger occurs in situations where it is not justified, or occurs repeatedly. In either of these cases, treatment is needed for anger management.
